The Empress 04:04
She opens me up My hands on my heart My feet on the floor The empress inside I am her, I am her He locked me up He kept me in I didn’t know How I could live I felt so lost I wasn’t me I felt so low I wasn’t free He broke all my trust Left me bare on the floor My heart a wreckage Until I found her She opens me up My hands on my heart My feet on the floor The empress inside I am her, I am her I stand before The water flows I wanted more I am alone It covers me So deep inside I see myself I will survive The shame and the pain Are leaving me now She comes to rebuild I find her somehow She opens me up My hands on my heart My feet on the floor The empress inside I am her, I am her She opens me up My hands on my heart My feet on the floor The empress inside I am her, I am her So many of us bound to our bodies To a life of saying yes To always acquiesce Can I ever choose? Can I ever love? Oh when will the yes be mine? She opens me up My hands on my heart My feet on the floor The empress inside I am her, I am her She opens me up My hands on my heart My feet on the floor The empress inside I am her, I am her Today I choose Today I choose joy Today I choose Today I choose love Today I choose Today I choose joy Today I choose Today I choose love I say yes I say yes I say yes I say yes I say yes I say yes I say yes I say yes I say yes I say yes I say yes I say yes I say yes I say yes I say yes I say yes

about

The Empress EP is the first release from Love Handles, an indie feminist rock band out of Champaign-Urbana, Illinois.

While predominantly a cover band, Love Handles created their first original song, "The Empress," to sing out about unhealthy relationships, healing from trauma, consent culture, and self-empowerment.

All proceeds from this release will go directly to Courage Connection, the Champaign-Urbana local domestic violence organization, which has been hit extra hard from the state of Illinois budget crisis. Please give what you can, and visit www.courageconnection.org for more information.

THANK YOUS:

To Sven, for your gracious support, awesome recording and mixing skills, and your fervent belief in our work and promoting good music and good causes in C-U.

To Analise, who was asked to create the image of "The Empress" before anyone knew what it really meant or who she really was, and to Jill for the tarot reading / inspiration.

To our very own DJ Vanille for reimagining our song in incredible ways that expand what our music means to us, and to the members of Tara Terra (Emily Blue, Colin Althaus, Nick Soria, and of course our Joey) for adding onto our song with us.

To anyone who's ever played with Love Handles: Aashika Anantharaman, Kimi Arquines, Joey Buttlar, Sarah Coleman, Jennifer Corbin, Brandon Evilla, Kyle Fleming, Jack Kelly, Bill Kirby, A'Keisha Lee, Lauren Lowrie, Molly McLay, Alex Nelson, TJ Sandstrom, Maha Tolba, Skot Wiedmann. And to our loved ones, friends, families, and anyone who's ever come to or invited us to perform in a show.

To the University of Illinois Women's Resources Center, for giving us a home as we've learned to support survivors and end rape culture, and to R.A.C.E.S. and Courage Connection, for doing this work in our community even when resources are very scarce.

And to anyone who has ever felt trapped, scared, unable to move -- to anyone whose experience with another human has left them seemingly broken -- you are not alone. You are the person you have been waiting for. You are everything and you are enough. You are what you need.

"The Empress" is for you.
